Sheepwrecked on Blencathra

These sheep preside over the steep slopes of Blencathra, a mountain in England’s Lake District. Extensive grazing on the fells of the Lake District has reduced the vegetation to scrubby grasses with few trees. Writer George Monbiot describes such landscapes as ‘sheepwrecked’. However, fell farming is part of the cultural identity of this area; upland sheep grazing has diminished nowadays but still very much persists.
